The Lady Pats have reason to smile after their win Friday night.
Back-to-back games are rare in high school basketball, but rarer still has to be the results of the two contests last week between Heritage and Houston County.
Girls - Houston County 31 - Heritage 40
After losing Wednesday night at Houston County, the Lady Patriots found themselves on the outside looking in at the race for the District 10-A regular-season title. Friday night, they played their way back into it with a season-defining 43-29 victory over the visiting Lady Irish.
Kimi Dorris hit a three-pointer to give the hosts the lead early in the second quarter, and the Lady Pats never trailed again. Dorris hit two more from long range during the period, scoring 10 of Heritage's 12 points in the quarter en route to her game-high 19 total.
Houston County increased the pressure after halftime, closing the gap to two points; however, Dorris, fouled on a 3-point attempt, made all three free throws to right the ship. Her final three, with 5:39 left in the game, brought the crowd to its feet, and the Lady Patriots held on through the scrappy endgame.
HOUSTON COUNTY (31) - Spurgeon 13, Baggett 6, Tolley 6, Torres 2, Deason 2, Reynolds 2
HERITAGE (40) - Dorris 19, Ray 14, Traughber 4, Cothan 2, Green 1

Boys - Houston County 60 - Heritage 38
Heritage played poorly Friday night, allowing the visiting Irish to exact a measure of revenge for their defeat Wednesday night with an ugly 60-38 win over the Patriots. As a fan, I'm glad the Pats got this one out of their system before tourney time.
The Patriots, after an anemic shooting start, found themselves shackled by inconsistant officiating - 51 fouls were called in the contest, 32 against the hosts, including three technical fouls and one flagrant foul.

HOUSTON COUNTY (60) - Roper 16, Hammond 12, Monroe 11, Skelton 9, Kelchner 6, Featherstone 3, Barnes 2, Meadows 1
HERITAGE (38) - Kirby 18, Harper 10, Moore 3, Morris 3, Ray 2, Reid 2
