Patriots pass opening test

After starting sluggishly, the Heritage men's basketball team used a third quarter run to push past a scrappy Merrol Hyde team in Tuesday night's 10-A district opener, 57-42.

The Patriots trailed from the start, playing as flat as the half-empty gym's atmosphere, but defended well enough to keep the visitors within reach. After trailing 9-6 after the first period, Devin Harper's 3-pointer from the left wing with 1:32 left in the half gave Heritage a 16-14 lead they would not relinquish.

Heritage broke the game open for good midway through the third period - Ethan Kirby hit his lone three from the left corner, then Louis Ray, who sparked off the bench, hit a three from the opposite corner. After a steal, Kirby then found Ray underneath on the break to complete the 8-point, :49 second swing, and led 35-19. The Hawks never got closer than 12 points after that sequence.

Heritage will face the winner of Thursday's McEwen - Houston Co. game on Friday night at 8:30 pm at Jo Byrns High School.

MERROL HYDE (42) - Underwood 21, Domahari 8, Lankster 5, Lang 3, Eisenbraun 1, Sartore 1

HERITAGE (57) - Harper 15, Bedwell 14, Kirby 8, Moore 6, L. Ray 6, Morris 4, D. Ray 2, Reid 2
