Demonstrating both a physical and a mental toughness not yet seen in the Patriots' gym this season, Heritage defeated number-one ranked Clarksville Academy, 52-46 Friday night. The Patriots led wire-to-wire in a hard-fought battle - the lead was never more than nine - and displayed a growing ability to finish close games.

Sophomore post players Daniel Ray and Jordan Bedwell gave the Cougars fits all night inside, as both players are beginning to attack the rim with increased aggression and sophistication. The hosts also received quality minutes from Louis Ray and Jared Morris, who provided a lift off the bench on both ends.

Why we play - John Ferguson's commentary on Friday's game

Heritage started fast, getting inside early against a Clarksville Academy defense missing one of its twin stars - Malcolm Smith was away at a church conference, leaving twin Martin to do the majority of the work inside for the visitors. Ethan Kirby's 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the quarter gave Heritage a 15-12 lead at the first break.

The Cougars extended their defense in the second quarter, looking to trap high. Heritage stumbled, but two clutch 3-pointers by Louis Ray off the bench kept the momentum with the home team, and Daniel Ray's put-back with seconds remaining brought the home crowd to its feet, cheering the Patriots' 29-24 halftime lead.

Clarksville Academy did threaten to take the lead midway through the third - two free throws from a technical foul during a tie-up cut the Patriot lead to one at 31-31. However, improved ball movement outside yielded several layups for the hosts, who led 39-35 entering the final quarter.

Bedwell fouled out on a questionable call on a rebound with five minutes left. Morris also left with five fouls with 2:22 left; however, Heritage proved resilient defensively, overcoming a 4-of-12 performance from the line in the end game. With a minute left, the Ray's put the final touches on the game - Louis took a charge on a driving Travis Russell, while Daniel rose and swatted the shot. Louis then dipped inside on a missed free throw, grabbing the rebound and putting it back to seal the win and hand the Cougars only their second loss of the season.

Cougar center Martin Smith was a force both inside and outside, finishing with a game-high 25 points. Kirby and Daniel Ray each led the Patriots with 10 points apiece.
